I may be a punk rock lovin’ mama but I am still a sucker for a good pop album (and cute boys with sweet falsetto’s). So, in case you’re giggling that I’m writing about David Archuleta – Shoosh, you! Also, I can listen to this album with my girls without having to censor any lyrics.
The Other Side of Down is David’s brand new album and it’s really good. I hear clicks and beeps and I like songs with clicks and beeps and gosh darnit, I like this album. It’s a little bit pop and a little bit rock and not very far off from a lot of the poppier indie rock stuff that I like. (Ben Gibbard, Andrew McMahon, Jim Adkins). I pretty much dig every track but I’m finding that the songs I keep humming are “Parachutes and Airplanes”, “Something ’bout Love”, and “Elevator”.
Maybe you didn’t know this but back in 2008 during Season 7 (wherein I was pleasantly surprised by the talent), I was praising David right and left, as evidence by my fury of American Idol posts at the Chicago Moms Blog (and I quote myself):
- American Idol: Top 12 Boys and My Secret Crush is Revealed!
“My favorites tonight were: David Archuleta *cough* crush *cough* great voice and because he was sassy.”
- American Idol: The Top 10 Boys
“David Archuleta – DAWG. HANDS DOWN, BEST PERFORMANCE OF THE EVENING. They saved the best for last. Nuff said. He’s going all the way this season. He’s so damn cute, I can’t take it. I voted twice and I NEVER do that.”
- American Idol: The Top 12 Sing The Beatles
“Then there is my David Archuleta. My sweet, sweet little David. HOW COULD YOU GO AND FORGET YOUR WORDS?! He sang “We Can Work It Out”, Stevie Wonder-style. Ah, doesn’t matter anyway. He’ll be coming back again and again. His past performances will help get him through this rough patch. Oh, I just cringed every time he missed his lines.”
- American Idol: The Top 5 Sing Neil Diamond
“David Archuleta was tiny and cute, like always. The kid can really sing! I foresee a very successful future in music for that young man. I wonder if Paula can see his future too?”
Look! Foreshadowing! “I am just going to call it right here, right now. We’re going to see David C. and David A. battle it out at the end.”
I know in 2008 I referred to him as “little” and “cute” (because he was) but there’s nothing little and cute about his voice. He has a strong, magnificent voice and look, foreshadowing again, he’s going to be making hit after hit for a long time to come. You can quote me on that.
On a scale of 1-10, The Other Side of Down gets an overall perfect score from me.
Singability Factor – 10
Danceability Factor – 10
Head bopping Factor – 10
I’m giving away 3 copies of David’s new album and entering to win one isn’t all that hard. All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post. You can say something nice about David (in case *gasp* he reads this post!) or, let us know if you would keep the CD or who you would give it to? I had a copy sent to my mom, because I’m a good daughter.
This giveaway will end on Thursday, October 21st at midnight PST and three (3) winners will be chosen at random and announced via our Facebook Fan Page, Twitter and this post. This giveaway is open to residents of the continental US.
Good luck! While you’re waiting to find out if you’re one of the winners, check out David’s video for “Something ’bout Love”

I am 100% in agreement with your, The Other Side of Down by David Archuleta is amazingly perfect!
I would just like to say that this post showed up in my google alerts and it’s making me grin :) Love your style, will have to check out some of your other posts!
Thanks for the nice review! Please don’t enter me in your giveaway. I bought a copy myself and would like an album-less fan have a better chance to win.
If David does a concert near you that is also a great concert for all ages. Clean, fun and good music. I know one fan that brings 4 generations to David’s concerts.
Thank you for the thoughtful and sincere review of David’s album! I love it too! Today I gave my copy away to my housekeeper who was enjoying it while she worked. So if I won your giveaway, I’d have one to keep for myself…or give to my favorite barista! LOL.
Gosh darn it I love the whole album! If I have to choose, I love love love the title track. It is so David! My Kind of Perfect made me cry the first time I heard it, and subsequent times too! I am in complete agreement with you on the three factors – singability, danceability, head bopping – LOL! If I should win, I will give it to a young person who can’t buy her/himself CDs.
I really like your review! :D
And the funny thing, you and me are about the same. I used to be a hard core rocker. I still am, but I remember the first time I saw David sing. I was almost shocked. Then I voted for AI the first time ever, and for someone that was my age.
And I made a friend that is around mine and David’s age today. He’s been working A LOT!!! He can’t afford college, so he had to take a semester off to work.
He doesn’t have a CD. May I give it to him? I’ll mail it to him myself.
Someone helped me get my CD, I want to help someone else. ^_^
My daughter would love it.
Loved your comments about DA’s new album! I’m one of David’s “senior” fans and my 2 faves are Elevator and Other Side of Down. Don’t you love how he has matured in the past 2 years?
I bought one of the deluxe “fan editions”, but if I won I would give the album to one of the younger staff at my library, who is borrowing my copy right now, because she couldn’t afford her own. In fact, though there is bout 40 years difference in our ages, we’re planning on attending David’s Christmas concert with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir — together!
My son really likes David. Wonderful voice
My niece would be thrilled if I won this for her! He is cutie!
All I can say is: “MOMS KNOW BEST”!!
I listened to David’s new album 2 times yesterday in my car. I’m an older (40ish) fan and I have to say I had the volume turned up very loud!! People were driving by and probably thinking “what is wrong with that old lady? I love the album! Some of my favorite songs on this album are: Something ’bout Love, Stomping the Roses and Things Are Going to Get Better.
I was a teenager when Elvis Presley came on the scene. All the girls went crazy. To me, he was just ok. While a always enjoyed music, I was never that wild about anyone in particular. Now, here I am, 72 yrs old, madly in love with the cutest, sweetest, most lovable 19 yr old I’ve ever seen. I love his singing, I want him to become the most famous singer ever, ever, ever, But David, you became popular on American Idol by singing BALLADS. And I’m sure it wasn’t the grammas that called in and voted (although I did) even though I’m sure they liked you best, also because you sang BALLADS. However, the “teens and tweens” did vote for you and that tells me that they also liked hearing you sing “BALLADS”. What I’m leading up to here is that I’m getting older, and I want a David Archuleta album of BALLADS before I die and I think the rest of the world wants that too.
love david!!! his music has helped me through some very rough times. love u david! forever an archie :)
This article is so awesome! It made me laugh so loud, haha. :)
If I won the album, I’d keep it because even though I’m a huge David fan, and have been meaning to buy the album, I don’t have it yet…
